Philip is the Co-Founder and CPO of Freedrum, he is originally from South Africa and has played the drums since he was 14 years old.

How did you first start learning how to play the drums?

I had two instructors at two different schools. One of them would devote most of his time to teaching me stroke patterns while the other taught me grooves. I spent most of my time either playing along to existing songs or trying to learn new grooves on sheet music.

Why do you love playing the drums?

When I was at school I was bullied a fair amount and drums gave me a way to escape through creativity + the activity. I was 14 when I started and played actively until about 18 or so.

What is your favorite song to drum to?

My favorite part of drums in a song would be the introduction to Consolation Prizes by Phoenix.

George CEO Freedrum

George is the Co-founder and CEO of Freedrum, he is originally from Melbourne Australia and has played the drums for over 25 years.

How did you first start learning how to play the drums?

My drumming story started when I was about 14 years old.  I had just changed schools and even though I wasn’t taking lessons the music coordinator let me have access to the school studio.  From then I would spend every free moment in the studio either on the drums or on the guitar.

Why do you still play the drums?

I love playing music in general as a form of expression. I play to myself, for myself, simply to get out of the busyness of my own mind.  I guess pure enjoyment and stress relief would be the best way to explain it.

What is your favorite song to drum to?

That’s an impossible question to answer when I was first starting out, I was most inspired by Mitch Mitchell from the Jimi Hendrix Experience, as well as Vinnie Paul from Pantera to some degree.  Nowadays I’m a huge fan of Questlove and I completely consume anything featuring Yussef Dayes.

Why do you love playing the drums?

Something about the rhythm and percussion that has always been amazing to me. I will sometimes not even care about the lyrics as long as the rhythm is killing it.

What is your favorite song to drum to?

I can’t actually play this song, but right now this is my favorite song. Separator by Radiohead.
